Blessing - God uses water and the Word (In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.) to make new believers. He blesses us, using these simple means, but means that are memorable. For this reason, it is important that the child be reminded that they have been baptized. When he/she asks in the future, "How can I know that I am a child of God?" We can tell him/her, "Because you were baptized."
Promise - God is making a promise to the one being baptized, "You will be my child forever no one else can claim you. You are safe forever with me." That promise extends in this life and in the eternal paradise of God - "I am with you always," Jesus said.
Responsibility - Baptism is not a magic act. In Matthew 28, Jesus says, Baptize and teach. You can't have one with the other - in other words, it is your responsibility as a parent and as a Christian to raise him/her to know the Lord. We don't baptize unless there is the intent to teach.
With that in mind, baptism is a wonderful gift of God - he has invited us to have a part in the forgiveness that Jesus earned on the cross!
